The Bergen Line has grown into a passenger/cargo combination line. The ships delivered mail in Scandinavia, mainly along Norway's gorgeous western coast with trips to Iceland and Antarctica. Bergen now offers 11 ships that explore fairly small segments of that region. Dakar is known as “the Paris of Africa”—the Senegalese capital has that sort of high culture, romantic vibe and outstanding food. At that time, it was the only way that residents of St. Helena could get their mail and all their supplies. Cargo ship cruises have a wealth of advantages – as well as some downsides. Freighter ships and combi-liners operate itineraries all over the world and of varying lengths.

The bad news is that, because the voyages are often longer, the total bill may exceed that of a shorter trip. But you’re getting a longer – and more unique – journey. You sail on working vessels that are transporting cargo. Instead of hundreds if not thousands of other passengers, you cruise with cargo (often containers), a handful of passengers, and a few crew members. Around 25 million people take a cruise each year.

Feel Like a Cruise? Look at Cargo Ship Cruises Instead and Reduce Your Carbon Footprint For a More Authentic Experience
And the ship is travelling anyway, you’re just along for the ride, rather than travelling especially to entertain paying customers. And you’ll pay for everything whether you use all the facilities or not.
Many people do not like to go all the way around the world due to time and money. Segmented trips are possible with a stopover in port for as long as you want. You can resume your voyage or fly home by plane if you have had enough. Segmented trips are perfect for people who do not have a lot of time to spend. Today the two major freighter cruises, Aranui 5 and RMS St. Helena, offer cruise ship-like amenities such as upgraded cabins, a swimming pool, bar and restaurant, plus onboard activities and guided or independent shore excursions.
Maximum and minimum ages are often part of the agreement. These types of trips are rare in our hectic, rushed society. If you’re privileged to take one, appreciate “slow travel” for its uniqueness, and all the benefits it brings to you – as well as the environment. Remember that whatever type of cruise you take, there are things that you can do to reduce your carbon footprint. For example, take public transit to port, turn lights out while not in your room and don’t waste food as you graze through their mile-long buffets. Maris offer trans-pacific cruises (amongst others) – travel from Los Angeles to China, for example.

Aranui 5 is a custom-built, dual-purpose passenger/freighter ship designed to offer all of comforts of a cruise liner, while operating as a supply ship. Aranui 5 is classified as a small vessel, accommodating approximately 230 passengers in 103 cabins. In short, if you require a lot of attention from the staff, freight cruising might not be a good choice. These trips are for people who have no qualms about landing in port, making their own local arrangements, and taking off for a day of exploring.
Deck plans of the mixed cargo ship aranui 5
But sailing on even the most comfortable freighter is a far cry from the modern cruising experience most people are familiar with, with few of the bells and whistles passengers have come to expect. There are no nightly shows or children's programming, for example, and dining options are limited so veteran cruisers should adjust their expectations accordingly. Unlike cruise ships, which include a gratuity in the fare, freighter cruises are often priced and paid for in euros and exclude tips. Freighter cruise travel agents suggest U.S. $4 a day for your cabin steward.
This four-bed cabin, 17 m², has a large double bed, two bunk beds and a private bathroom with shower and hairdryer. Whether a Cargo ship has 1 or 101 passengers onboard, it will still sail and use just as much fuel, making your journey almost completely 'carbon neutral'. Conjure an image of what’s it is like to go on a cruise.
Prepaid shore excursions through the line are not an option. Taking on a few paying passengers to create an added revenue stream is nice, but it is not priority one on a freighter cruise. For that reason alone, this is not a good option for many budget travelers.
So shop around for a freighter that goes to the right places for you. Many tickets can be bought round trip or from your starting port to only one other port; it all depends on where you want to go, which is the beauty of freighter travel! Some trips can be as short as 15 days or as long as 120 days for Cargo ship cruise. The shortest passages are transatlantic and these vary between 8 and 12 days each way, while a freighter voyage can make it around the world in between 80 and 120 days on ship cruise.
It’s a short 10-minute walk from Pier 66, but you’ll need a ride from Pier 91. There are also a number of hotels nearby if you want to stay in downtown Seattle. Cruise lines also offer airport to cruise terminal shuttles for guests arriving on the same day the cruise departs.

The same system also makes this the ideal place to drop off cruisers who are checking in. Unfortunately, Metro bus service is not a convenient option to either cruise terminal. It is about a 10-minute walk to the terminal once you’re at the base of staircase. Pier 66 does not have any bus service from the downtown core. What's New for the 2024 Alaska Cruise Season - Cruise Critic
You can take a taxi, use rideshare services like Uber or Lyft, or opt for airport shuttle services. Alternatively, public transit is available via the Central Link Light Rail that connects the airport to downtown Seattle, from where you can take a taxi to the cruise terminal. Both Uber and Lyft operate in Seattle, providing a convenient way for people to get from the airport, hotel, — or anywhere else — to the cruise port. The ride-share services will cost an estimated $65-80 from the airport to the cruise terminals.
Norwegian Jewel 9-Day Alaska
ParkingGeneral ParkingPier 91 parking is available to all cruise passengers. The secure lot offers 600 spaces and is conveniently located on-site. Friends and family who pick up or drop off passengers also are encouraged to use the lot or the free cell phone lot. Driving to the PortIf you’re lucky enough to live in the area, you can simply drive to the cruise port. And while traffic in the area can be trying, it’s hard to beat the convenience of driving in for your cruise. No matter which terminal you sail from there is parking available at the port.
Port Seattle operates Terminal 66's facilities outside the Alaskan season. The 15-year lease deal was estimated to generate USD 2+ billion in business revenue, ~900 new jobs, USD 65+ million in local and state taxes. In 2015, the cruise port handled 192 ship calls and 895,055 passengers.
Depending on the cruise line, cruise ships dock in Seattle at Pier 66, close to Pike Place Market, or at Pier 57, towards the north end of downtown. If you have limited time to explore before or after your cruise or if the cruise ship is docking for a short day, here are some of the Seattle Attractions you can experience. First, your cruise line will let you know where to arrive, but the rule of thumb is that if you are sailing on Norwegian or Oceania, then you’ll head to Pier 66. The staff then picks them up and they are sent to the airport and loaded on the plane. That way you can explore the city for the day or simply head to the airport without worrying about your luggage. After going through customs and immigration, it’s another minute ride to the airport after getting to your transportation.
Given the location, parking is at a premium so there aren’t a lot of spots. It’s located near Pier 91, but offers a shuttle to both terminals. Official Port ParkingLike all cruise ports, the Port of Seattle offers parking right at the terminal. Both Pier 66 and Pier 91 have parking lots available to passengers with more than a thousand spaces each.
To Bell Street Cruise Terminal at Pier 66
These are people who elect to carry all of their bags with them and don’t need assistance getting off the ship. TaxisOf course, if rideshare isn’t for you then you can always take a taxi. Expect the general prices to be a bit higher than a comparable ride with Uber/Lyft. If you’re flying in for your cruise, it’s always a good idea to plan to arrive a day early. This way if anything goes awry with your flights — equipment delays, weather, computer issues, etc. — then you still have plenty of time to get to the port on cruise day. Both terminals are about 15 miles from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
On August 12, 2015, the seaport signed a 15-year lease deal with NCLH (Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings). The deal secured all NCLH ships (NCL, Oceania and RSSC-Regent Seven Seas) in Port Seattle for the full term of the lease of Bell Street Terminal (Pier 66). The guaranteed passenger volume was estimated to bring ~USD 73 million of revenue to the cruise port. According to official statistics, Alaskan cruises from Seattle generate ~USD 440 million in economic impact annually.
This proves that you don’t need to be adjacent to the cruise port to enjoy downtown. Seattle is the ultimate gateway for those embarking on an Alaskan cruise and a must-visit destination for anyone keen to check out its iconic attractions. With a bustling port that received 1.43 million passengers last year, it’s a key point for cruisers heading to Alaska’s rugged beauty via major cruise lines. Unlike other cruise ports, the terminals aren’t located at one single spot.
Exploring Seattle through a city tour comes highly recommended, thanks to its rich history and vibrant culture. It’s an efficient way to dive into the city’s key sights and sounds. City tours are invaluable in any new city, offering insights, history, and local tips that enhance your understanding and experience. There are accommodations near Pier 66 for those eager to stroll to the terminal on cruise morning. However, this convenience doesn’t extend to departures from Pier 91. If you’re sailing anyone else like Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Celebrity, Carnival, and others, then head to Pier 91.
The cost will vary from $23-$50 per day depending on the vehicle type. In 2024, the cruise port reported a total of 275 booked berthings with estimated 800,000+ passengers. In late-November 2018, Port Seattle's Terminal 18 (operated by SSA Marine Inc) surpassed the 1 million TEU-container volume.
One service that is unique to cruisers at the Port of Seattle is the complimentary Port Valet. The port provides a luggage transfer service direct from the ship to the airport at the end of your cruise as part of their streamlined disembarkation process. This service is possible as Sea-Tac Airport and the Port of Seattle are run by the same authority.
Pier 66 currently serves Oceania Cruises and Norwegian Cruise lines. The terminal is part of an 11-acre complex right on Seattle’s waterfront close to Pike Place Market, the Big Wheel, Seattle Aquarium and the downtown district. Older guests will not have to struggle with heavy bags or look for porters to assist. The service allows you to explore Seattle before your flight without having luggage in tow and it allows you to skip baggage lines at the airport.
Both were innovations that debuted with the Vista-class ships. They also lack exclusive, keycard-restricted cabin areas and some of the eateries found on Vista-class ships. Six of the 27 vessels Carnival will operate by the summer of 2024 measure less than 100,000 tons, which makes them almost mid-size by today's cruise ship standards. In 2019, Carnival Cruise Line gave the cruise ship a massive $200 million renovation and a name change to Carnival Sunrise. The vessel originally debuted in 1999 and was the second Destiny class ship. Carnival Cruise Line’s largest ship as of December 2023 is the Carnival Jubilee.
Carnival Liberty Size
So, to help you out, here is a list of Carnival ships, biggest to smallest, based on tonnage — a ship's internal capacity, as measured by volume. It's easy to remember that, generally, the newest ships are the largest Carnival ships. However, because Carnival Cruise Line has more than two dozen vessels in its fleet, it can be difficult to keep track of the ships that fall in between the newest and oldest. A Carnival passenger taking seven-night cruises will hit the Platinum level during their 11th sailing. Sail a few longer voyages, like a transatlantic sailing, and you could reach it even sooner.
How Many Cruise Ships Does Carnival Cruise Line Have in Their Fleet?
This can be a huge plus for travelers who like to have a lot of options when vacationing. No cruise line is as large and well-represented in cruising as Carnival. The line is the largest in the North American market, with roughly two dozen ships sailing from ports across the United States, from Long Beach to Galveston to Miami to Baltimore to San Juan. Later in the year, the name was revealed to be Carnival Jubilee. Carnival Panorama, another sister to Carnival Vista, entered service as the cruise line's flagship on December 11, 2019. She became the first new ship to homeport on the West Coast since Paradise (now Carnival Paradise) in 1998.
Can you provide a list of Carnival ships from biggest to smallest?
However, with two exceptions, they're not giants by today's standards. Carnival ships are all about fun in a very laid-back, unpretentious, nothing-too-fancy sort of way. Our ships sail to stunning destinations — see just where on the map we go. Each of our ships is a unique experience — check the features and find out which ship is right for you. The Carnival Sunshine was previously the Carnival Triumph and underwent significant enhancements, making it one of the most sought-after ships in the fleet.
Now, Carnival is switching gears — no doubt because the giant ships unveiled by some other lines have been enormously popular with cruisers. For many years, Carnival steered clear of the big ship trends in the industry. Executives thought the ever-bigger vessels being deployed by such lines as Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises were too big to make for an enjoyable cruise experience. Unlike Royal Caribbean and some other cruise lines, Carnival doesn't always drastically change the design of its ships from class to class. As mentioned above, Carnival's ships can be broken down into eight distinct groups or classes. A key detail about Carnival ships is that there are a lot of similarities from class to class within the Carnival fleet.
Pricing changes over time, but the fastest "premium" service on Carnival vessels was recently priced at $21.25 per day when bought in advance ($25 per day when bought onboard). At 800 feet in length, these aren't the biggest roller coasters ever. However, they're real ones — the first ever on a cruise ship. For the most part, Carnival ships don't have quite as many features on board as Royal Caribbean or Norwegian vessels, in part because they're not as big. They're still packed with a variety of attractions, including multiple entertainment venues, casinos, spas and lots of deck-top fun zones such as water parks and ropes courses. However, for many years it chose not to follow rivals such as Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises in building ever-bigger ships.
Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse, notably, has its very own in-house brewery you can see behind glass walls — something still relatively rare on cruise ships. It makes house beers including Parched Pig West Coast IPA and Parched Pig Toasted Amber which you'll find on many Carnival vessels in kegs and cans. Carnival is the only cruise line to keg and can its own beer.
Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration are now the only Carnival ship on the list of the 50 biggest cruise ships. Carnival Firenze is one of the newer ships coming to the fleet, and though it’s not the largest, it provides exceptional amenities and experiences for passengers. She is the largest ship in Carnival’s fleet, weighing 183,521 gross registered tons with a maximum passenger capacity of 6,631 in 2,687 staterooms. Carnival Conquest is 110,000 GRTs and holds 2,980 passengers (based on two per cabin).
That includes 3,002 cruise vacationers and 1,150 staff members. The Carnival Sunshine total number of staterooms is 1,321. The Carnival Freedom has a construction date of 2007 and a total size of 110,000 gross tons.
The ship has something for every type of traveler, including three kids clubs, adult-only spaces, and over a dozen different dining options. Around the ship, you’ll find spaces like Phantom Lounge and Dr. Frankenstein’s Lab, where you can see shows or dance the night away. When you’re ready to soak up the sun, find a lounge chair at the adults-only pool deck or splash down on one of the slides at WaterWorks. With 27 ships and hundreds of itineraries, there’s a Carnival cruise for everyone. Carnival Cruise Line’s newest ships are the Carnival Celebration, Carnival Luminosa, and Mardi Gras.
The first-ever Carnival cruise ship to exceed size limits marked a significant milestone in the company’s history, allowing for larger and more innovative ship designs. Carnival Cruise Ships have sister ships such as the Carnival Triumph, Carnival Mardi Gras, and Carnival Firenze, each offering unique experiences for passengers. The Carnival Cruise Ships range from the smallest to the largest, providing different experiences for passengers. For example, the smallest is currently the Carnival Paradise at 70,367 gross registered tons, and the largest is Carnival Jubilee at 183,521 gross registered tons. Carnival Elation is a Fantasy Class ship and sister to Carnival Paradise.
Mardi Gras is also the only ship name in the current Carnival Cruise Line fleet without including the word Carnival. This honors Carnival’s original Mardi Gras that first sailed for the brand on March 11, 1972. Carnival has made things a little confusing for Cruise Addicts by completely renaming and refurbishing some of its older vessels.

Seas the day with an impromptu vacay
From the major cruise lines, most of the big-ship lines offer a consistent schedule of three-night cruises. The higher-end, luxury lines rarely offer a sailing that short. The most popular weekend cruises sail from Miami, Port Canaveral or Palm Beach in Florida, to the Bahamas, with one or two stops in Nassau, Freeport or the cruise line's private island. Consider it a quick dash to the beach — ironic because you have to get to a warm-weather, coastal area to meet your ship in the first place. The days of the two-night cruise to nowhere are gone, but two- and three-night weekend cruises still exist from ports ranging from Miami to Los Angeles. Read on to learn who sails these short getaways, where you can go and how much that weekend jaunt to the Bahamas is going to cost you.
